Blood Sugar Control

Blood Sugar Control & Diabetes

The body has its own mechanism to control blood sugar levels, however, many factors can cause a disruption in that mechanism which leads to blood sugar imbalance. When our blood sugar levels become unbalanced, it can lead to serious short and long term problems and disorders such as hypoglycemia (low levels of blood sugar), hyperglycemia (high levels of blood sugar), or diabetes. Diabetes is of particular concern and needs special attention as it can be present in the body for years before it is detected in a person. In the long term, uncontrolled blood sugar levels can damage the vessels that supply blood to important organs, such as the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Diabetes may be caused by genetic or environmental factors but it is still important to take preventative measures and make sure your blood sugar levels stay balanced, particularly in older age. Preventative measures can be to watch the amount of sugar intake and reduce it if necessary, regular physical activity and to include food and supplements that help lower or control blood sugar levels.
